Urbanisation is a modern world wide phenomenon. The recent mass migration of people from rural areas to cities is as important as the transition of ancient mankind from hunter gatherers to farmers. Manifesting differently from one culture to another, few nations have witnessed the urbanisation process as vividly as China. With it’s rapid economic boom over several decades, China’s urbanisation has been declared by the Economist Intelligence Unit as “the biggest demographic change in human history”.
Captured through the lens of a Chinese and foreign photographer, this exhibition offers visual representations of the contrasting lifestyles between Chinas rural and city dwellers and explores themes related to the modernisation and urbanisation.
